Age Concern Project

The sixth form is involved in a joint project with Age concern which consists of hosting a special afternoon twice a month for a group of about 10 local elderly people. Sixth Form volunteers are required to help and support our elderly visitors and generally befrend and socialise with them.

Days:

First and third Wednesday of each month 1.30-4.15pm

Film/Book Club

The film club will provide you with the opportunity to watch some cinema "classics" - both old and new - and to discuss the merits and contribution of these films. For those of you who love a good book, the book club is the ideal place to chill out and indulge yourself. Both clubs are open to everyone.

School Support

Learning Support— over the past few years, many sixth formers have provided an invaluable service to the Learning Support Dept by working with individual Lower School pupils who have learning difficulties or special needs.

Birtenshaw SupportTurton Sixth Form has long had a special relationship with the staff and pupils of Birtenshaw school, five-minutes walk away. Many of the children are severely physically and mentally disabled and require a lot of support both in their lessons and in their leisure.. Sixth Formers go to help with horse riding, dancing, swimming, trampolining etc.

Primary School Support— Those who take part work with a particular class of pupils usually for a full year so they can get to know the pupils and become familiar with teaching and learning strategies, follow progress/development etc.

This kind of experience is particularly valuable to those who are interested in teaching or a similar career but anyone's help is welcome and all those who have taken part in the scheme have found it most rewarding.
